A salmonella infection has been linked to the consumption of eggs distributed in Wyoming, as part of a larger multistate outbreak, County 17 reports.

According to a release from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the outbreak is connected to recalled brown cage-free and brown certified organic eggs supplied by August Eff Company, based in Hilmar, California. The investigation, conducted in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), also includes state and local health officials.

So far, 134 individuals across 10 states have been reported to have been infected with Salmonella enteritidis. Of these cases, 38 people have been hospitalized, and one death has been reported. Although the outbreak has affected several states, including Wyoming, no illnesses have been reported in Wyoming at this time. The CDC has since declared the outbreak over.

As part of the investigation, the FDA conducted an inspection of cage-free laying houses operated by August Eff Company. During this inspection, three environmental samples tested positive for Salmonella and were confirmed to match the strain of the bacteria responsible for the illnesses, through whole genome sequencing (WGS) analysis. These eggs were already included in a recall from the company and are no longer available for sale.

The FDA has confirmed that all recalled eggs should have been removed from the market and are past their shelf life. With the investigation now complete, the FDA urges consumers to be aware of the recall and to ensure that any affected eggs are discarded.

Salmonella infection typically occurs within 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food, with symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps. The illness usually lasts for four to seven days. Certain groups, such as young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems, are at higher risk of severe infection.

For more information on the recall or symptoms of Salmonella, consumers are encouraged to follow updates from the FDA and CDC.
