Hillary Clinton, Jake Sullivan Reportedly Raised Concerns About Biden’s 2024 Bid, Klain Tells Investigators

Ron Klain, former White House Chief of Staff to ex-President Joe Biden, told House investigators that both Hillary Clinton and Jake Sullivan approached him with concerns about Biden’s political future months before the former president ended his re-election campaign in July 2024.
During a five-hour voluntary interview with staff from the House Oversight Committee on Thursday, Klain reportedly said that Clinton and Sullivan believed Biden — already in his 80s — wasn’t politically viable by the time the next election cycle rolled around. While Klain maintained that Biden was mentally sharp and capable of serving, the private remarks from two top Democratic insiders signal that doubts inside the party may have surfaced far earlier than the public realized.
According to a source familiar with the testimony, Sullivan — Biden’s former national security adviser — told Klain that the president was “less effective in 2024 compared to 2022.” The source didn’t specify whether the concerns were about Biden’s cognitive health or broader political performance.
This comes as Oversight Chair James Comer continues his probe into whether Biden’s inner circle downplayed or concealed signs of mental decline during his final year in office. The investigation has drawn fierce scrutiny, especially after Biden’s withdrawal from the race reignited debate about his fitness to lead.
Clinton’s and Sullivan’s alleged warnings could carry weight within the Democratic establishment — both are major players who have long been close to the center of power in Washington. If confirmed, their behind-the-scenes concerns would mark a striking contrast with the more unified public front the party maintained through much of 2023 and early 2024.
A spokesperson for Sullivan, however, denied the claims.
“Jake did not have a conversation with Ron about Joe Biden running for president before the debate,” Adrienne Watson said.
