A quiet Monday morning turned deadly outside one of Reno’s busiest landmarks, when a man opened fire near the Grand Sierra Resort valet area, killing three people and wounding three more before being shot and arrested by police.

It happened just after 7:30 a.m. at the sprawling casino-hotel complex, a popular venue that draws summer tourists and once hosted a campaign rally for Donald Trump.

According to authorities, the suspect, whose name has not yet been released, walked up to a group of people at the valet area, pulled a handgun, and tried to fire. The weapon initially jammed. But once he got it working, he opened fire and chaos erupted.

The shooter took off on foot into the parking lot, where he encountered an armed security guard from the casino. He shot at the guard, who returned fire. The suspect was ultimately shot by law enforcement and taken into custody.

Police say the man didn’t appear to know the victims, and it’s still unclear whether he had any ties to the resort — either as a guest or staff member.

“This appears to be a completely unprovoked, targeted act of violence,” said Sparks Police Chief Chris Crawforth, whose department is leading the investigation. “We’re still digging for a motive.”

Two of the wounded victims remain in critical condition as of Monday evening. One person has already been released from the hospital.

Photos from the scene, including one provided by bystander Michael Sisco, show police vehicles and heavily armed officers swarming the front of the casino.

The Grand Sierra is one of Reno’s marquee spots, known for its 24/7 gaming, concerts, and family events. The fact that this unfolded in broad daylight in such a high-traffic area has rattled locals and visitors alike.
