Trump’s Approval Rating Hits New Low as Economy and Immigration Policies Face Backlash

US President Donald Trump’s approval rating has slid to 40 percent, marking the lowest point of his second term as more Americans voice concerns over his handling of the economy and immigration, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll.
The three-day national survey, which wrapped up Monday, gathered responses from 1,023 adults across the United States and carries a margin of error of three percentage points. Trump’s approval had stood at 41 percent in the previous Reuters poll earlier this month.
The numbers highlight a starkly divided electorate: 83 percent of Republicans back the president’s performance, while only 3 percent of Democrats say the same. Among independents, just about a third approve of the job Trump is doing.
Trump campaigned on a promise to turbocharge the US economy and deliver a hardline immigration crackdown. But Americans appear increasingly skeptical of his results. Immigration—once one of Trump’s strongest policy areas—has taken a hit in recent months. Earlier this year, about half of US adults supported his handling of immigration. Now, support has dropped sharply.
A CNN/SSRS poll released recently showed 55 percent of Americans believe Trump has gone too far in deporting undocumented immigrants, a 10-point increase since February.
“I understand wanting to get rid of illegal immigrants, but the way that’s being done is very aggressive,” said Donovan Baldwin, 18, of Asheboro, North Carolina, who didn’t vote in 2024. “And that’s why people are protesting—it comes off as aggression. It’s not right.”
On the economy, the latest Reuters poll gave Trump a 38 percent approval rating, up slightly from 35 percent two weeks ago. But CNN’s data shows the president still struggles to convince Americans that his economic policies are benefiting them, with persistently negative ratings throughout his second term—unlike the more favorable views he enjoyed during his first stint in office.
