As the countdown to kickoff ticks closer, Wyoming high school football is gearing up for a new season — and with it, a fresh wave of head coaches ready to lead their squads into battle this fall.

Practice for Class 4A starts Monday, Aug. 11, while the rest of the state — 3A, 2A, 1A 9-Man, and 1A 6-Man — will hit the field a week later on Monday, Aug. 18. It’s the 17th straight year Wyoming’s stuck with this staggered start.

But this season brings more than just first snaps and new plays. Ten teams across the state will take the field with new head coaches calling the shots, bringing fresh energy, new strategies, and in many cases, filling some pretty big shoes.

Here’s a breakdown of the coaching shakeups by class:

1A 6-Man

  • Kaycee BuckaroosJordan Largent takes over for Dave Largent (yep, father-son switcheroo).
  • Riverside RebelsMatt Jensen steps in for Jason Mitchell.

1A 9-Man

  • Guernsey-Sunrise VikingsTroy Reichert replaces Neil Hughes.
(Note: Guernsey-Sunrise is playing a 6-man schedule this year and won’t be playoff-eligible.)
  • Wright PanthersWade Messner takes the reins from Larry Yeradi.
  • Wyoming Indian ChiefsJames Cole steps in for Nate Reinhardt.

2A

  • Glenrock HerdersHeath Hayes replaces Zane Perez.
  • Moorcroft WolvesBenjamin Glenn takes over from Cameron Braden.
  • Wheatland BulldogsPeter Fenster steps in for Tony Borton.

3A

  • Rawlins OutlawsCody Hooker replaces David Hastings.

4A

  • South BisonSteven Fernandez takes over for Eli Moody.

The 2025 season officially begins Aug. 28-30 for Class 4A, which opens with a full five-game schedule. For the other divisions, it’s optional to play that first weekend — most will likely launch their season over Sept. 4-6.

So whether it’s a veteran coach switching schools, a young gun getting their first shot, or a program looking to turn the page — these new hires could shake up the 2025 season in a big way.
