Big news for Wyoming’s trona country — a major new rail deal is on track, TrainsPRO reports.

OmniTRAX has just been picked to handle rail service for Tata Chemicals’ giant soda ash mine in Green River. If you’re not familiar, this is one of the biggest soda ash operations in North America, sitting on one of the world’s largest reserves of trona ore — the rock that makes soda ash.

The new deal kicked off Aug. 1 and means OmniTRAX will handle dedicated shipping and track switching services for the site. We’re talking about 2.7 million tons of soda ash moving each year — the stuff that goes into glass, detergents, chemicals, and textiles.

“Tata Chemical is a major global player in soda ash, and we’re honored to be working with them on their biggest US operation,” said Sergio Sabatini, president and COO of OmniTRAX. “We’re bringing top-tier rail safety and service to Wyoming, and we’re excited to get rolling.”

Union Pacific — the mainline rail titan — is also part of the equation. UP’s executive VP Kenny Rocker said they’re “excited to work with OmniTRAX” to provide safe and steady service to the Green River plant.

“We’ve been part of the global shipping game for more than 160 years,” Rocker added, “and this is a great way to support growing worldwide demand for Wyoming soda ash.”

OmniTRAX is part of Colorado’s Broe Group and runs 31 railroads across North America, along with operations at ports, industrial hubs, and logistics parks.

This latest partnership is another big win for Green River’s massive soda ash industry — and a strong sign that Wyoming’s mineral economy is still going full steam ahead.
