A 47-year-old Wyoming man died early Friday morning after his SUV veered off US Highway 26 near Alpine, rolled several times, and slammed into a tree.

The victim, identified as Theodore Filcher, was driving a Toyota 4Runner through a winding, forested section of the highway around 2:50 a.m., according to the Wyoming Department of Transportation. At mile marker 121.5, investigators say Filcher failed to make a right-hand curve.

His SUV slid on its driver’s side for nearly 300 feet before rolling multiple times down a turnout, smashing into a large tree, and ricocheting back toward the road. The vehicle finally came to a stop on the highway shoulder.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says no weather or road hazards were reported at the time, but speed may have been a factor. Filcher wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

The crash marks Wyoming’s 75th road death this year—just 11 fewer than the toll in 2023, which was the state’s deadliest year in recent memory.
