Three Injured in Times Square Shooting, Suspect in Custody

Three people were wounded in an early-morning shooting at New York City’s Times Square, police confirmed on Saturday.
The incident occurred at around 1:20 a.m. One person has been taken into custody for questioning, though no charges have yet been filed, the New York Police Department said.
Footage shared on social media showed panicked crowds running from the scene, police surrounding a vehicle, and officers assisting victims on the ground. All three injured individuals were hospitalized with non-life-threatening wounds.
Authorities have not yet released details on how the shooting unfolded.
The attack comes at a time when New York City is experiencing its lowest level of gun violence in decades, with shootings down 23% compared to the same period last year.
Times Square is among several locations where firearms are prohibited under state law, alongside schools, hospitals, and public transportation. Handgun owners must also demonstrate “good moral character” to obtain a permit — a regulation upheld when the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear a challenge to New York’s gun laws in April.
