The Wyoming Cowboys are deep into fall camp, with week three kicking off Tuesday morning under the lights of War Memorial Stadium. After enjoying a breather on Monday for the team’s annual Media Day, the Pokes were back to work — and head coach Jay Sawvel says the progress is obvious.

“This will be a vastly improved football team,” Sawvel told reporters. “It’s easy to see for anyone who’s out there watching us every day.”

One reason for Sawvel’s optimism? A stacked receiving corps. Senior Jaylen Sargent, an All-Mountain West selection, is back after averaging a blistering 20.9 yards per catch last season, piling up 480 yards and two touchdowns. He’s joined by sophomore Chris Durr Jr., who led Wyoming in receptions as a true freshman with 31 grabs for 348 yards and a score.

Sargent says the group’s chemistry with quarterback Kaden Anderson could be the key to unlocking its full potential.

“The potential in the receiver room is unlimited,” Sargent said. “We know Kaden’s going to get it to us every time. We just have to make the plays and be confident. This group has a fire — we want to prove we can play.”

Cowboy fans will get an up-close look at the team this week when Wyoming hosts an open practice during “Community Night” on Thursday, Aug. 14, at 7:30 p.m. inside War Memorial Stadium. Gates open at 7 p.m., with entry through Gate 4 on the east side. Seating will be limited to the lower east stands because of ongoing construction, and parking will be available in the Ford Lot nearby.

The event is free, but fans will have to keep their cameras tucked away — no photos or video will be allowed during practice.

With the season inching closer, Thursday’s practice will be one of the last chances for the public to get an early look at a Wyoming team hoping to make noise in the Mountain West this fall.
