Mexico City Mayor Clara Brugada has announced the arrest of 13 people in connection with a May attack that killed two senior officials in the capital.

Brugada said on Wednesday that three of the suspects directly took part in the shooting, while the others helped with the planning and logistics.

“In this operation, 13 people were arrested, including three people who directly participated in the murder, and others related to the logistical preparation of the event,” she told reporters.

The brazen daytime shooting shocked the city, which is often considered safer than much of the rest of Mexico.

The victims were Ximena Guzman, Brugada’s personal secretary, and Jose Munoz, one of her advisers. Both were gunned down by attackers on motorbikes.

Brugada vowed justice in a statement on social media:

“In memory of our colleagues and out of respect for their families and friends, this government will not rest until the truth is known and justice is served.”

After the attack, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, a close ally of Brugada and former mayor of the capital, promised full support from the national government.

“We express our solidarity and support for the families of these two individuals who have worked in our movement for a long time,” Sheinbaum said. “We will give Mayor Brugada all the support the city needs.”

The killings highlight ongoing violence against political figures, security officials, and journalists in Mexico.

In 2020, Mexico City’s security chief Omar Garcia Harfuch survived an ambush that left two bodyguards and a bystander dead.

Sheinbaum’s government has pushed a security strategy focused on intelligence gathering, strengthening the National Guard, and addressing root causes such as poverty.

Earlier this month, the United States issued a travel advisory, warning its citizens about high levels of violent crime in Mexico, including homicide, kidnapping, and carjacking.
