A new poll has found that half of voters in the United States believe Israel is committing genocide in Gaza.

The Quinnipiac University survey, released Wednesday, shows 77 percent of Democrats and 51 percent of independents share that view. Among Republicans, though, 64 percent say they do not think genocide is taking place, while only 20 percent agree.

The poll also points to growing resistance against military support for Israel. Six in 10 voters now oppose Washington sending more aid — the highest number since Quinnipiac started asking the question in late 2023.

When it comes to sympathies, Americans are nearly split: 37 percent say they feel closer to Palestinians, while 36 percent side with Israelis. That’s a record low for Israel and a record high for Palestinians in Quinnipiac’s polling history going back to 2001.

The poll surveyed 1,220 registered voters and carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 points.

Rights groups like Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch have also accused Israel of genocide in Gaza — claims the Israeli government denies.

In January last year, the International Court of Justice said South Africa could proceed with its case accusing Israel of genocide and ruled that Palestinians had “plausible rights to protection from genocide.”

Later, in November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, ex-Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and deceased Hamas commander Mohammed Deif, on charges of alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.
