The University of Wyoming’s sports program isn’t just filling stands—it’s fueling the state’s economy. A new valuation from Wyoming Athletics and consulting firm Collegiate Consulting pegs the average annual economic impact at $206.4 million, with more than $619 million generated over the three fiscal years studied (2022–2024).

“We were impressed with Collegiate Consulting’s work elsewhere and wanted clear answers for lawmakers and the public about what Division I athletics does for Wyoming’s brand and bottom line,” Athletics Director Tom Burman said.

Where the money’s coming from

  • Media exposure: UW games and content delivered $288.8 million in advertising value across TV, streaming, and social media over three years.
  • Events & camps: Game days, summer camps, and other facility uses added $145.4 million to local spending.
  • People power: The direct and indirect impact of student-athletes and athletics staff generated $112.3 million for Laramie and nearby communities.
  • External revenues: Sponsorships, media rights, and other outside dollars contributed $72.7 million across the period.

Football was the heavyweight, accounting for $71.4 million of the $104.9 million in total game-day impact, with men’s and women’s basketball next in line.

“The University of Wyoming is not only the state’s flagship institution, but also its flagship brand,” said Russell Wright, founder and managing director of Collegiate Consulting. “This study quantifies the economic value of Cowboy and Cowgirl Athletics—how they strengthen the University, enrich the student experience, and fuel local and statewide growth.”

Founded in 2005, Collegiate Consulting has worked with more than 750 colleges, conferences, and associations on feasibility studies, strategic plans, enrollment analysis, and economic valuations. The Wyoming study was funded with private donations from the Cowboy Joe Club.

From brand exposure to hotel nights and hot-dog sales, UW Athletics is a major engine for Laramie and the state—one that keeps spinning long after the final whistle.
