Iran has executed a man it described as one of Israel’s “most important” spies, state media reported on Sunday, in the latest sign of heightened tensions between Tehran and Tel Aviv.

Mizan news agency, which is affiliated with Iran’s judiciary, said Bahman Choobiasl had been accused of passing sensitive information to Israel’s Mossad intelligence agency and meeting with its officials. No further details about the case were provided.

The execution comes as Iran and Israel continue to trade blows in a shadow war of assassinations, cyberattacks and air strikes across the region.

On 29 June 2025, Israeli missiles struck Tehran’s Evin Prison, a rare direct attack inside Iran, killing and wounding dozens, according to Iranian officials. In the weeks since, Iran has intensified its security operations, vowing to hunt down alleged Israeli agents.

Images from Tehran on Sunday showed residents riding motorcycles past buildings still damaged from the June strike.

Iran’s government did not release evidence publicly to support the accusations against Choobiasl, but officials have repeatedly claimed Mossad has recruited Iranians to sabotage or spy on sensitive facilities, including nuclear and military sites.

Israel has not commented on the execution.
