Robert Lewandowski rolled back the years with a hat-trick as Barcelona beat Celta Vigo 4-2 on Sunday, slicing Real Madrid’s La Liga lead to just three points.
The 37-year-old striker, who’s endured an injury-hit start to the season, was ruthless in Balaídos, while teenager Lamine Yamal added another to seal the win. Marcus Rashford also impressed, assisting twice and playing a key role in Barcelona’s attack.
“After the injury I can see a different Robert Lewandowski — he’s positive, he came back very early,” said Barça coach Hansi Flick. “For his confidence, it’s great to score three goals today.”
Lewandowski called the game “one of the craziest” of the season but was pleased with the result.
“Vigo is always difficult for us but now we have fewer points between us and Real Madrid,” he told Movistar.
Barcelona’s intensity paid off early as Lewandowski converted a penalty before Celta hit back immediately. Rashford’s cross then set up Lewandowski’s second, only for Borja Iglesias to equalise again. Yamal restored Barça’s lead before halftime, and Lewandowski’s header in the 73rd minute completed his treble and the job.
Earlier in the day, Real Madrid dropped points in a goalless draw at Rayo Vallecano. Xabi Alonso’s side struggled to create clear chances, with Kylian Mbappé, Vinicius Junior and Jude Bellingham all kept quiet.
“We need to keep growing, improving, and stay demanding of ourselves,” Alonso said after the match.
