Wyoming to Sledders: Grab Your Decal Early — and Ride Smart This Winter

Wyoming to Sledders: Grab Your Decal Early — and Ride Smart This Winter
Wyoming State Parks

Winter hits fast in Wyoming, and the State Trails Program is urging snowmobilers to get ready now: buy your user-fee decals, double-check your registration, and brush up on safety before the first big dump, County 10 reports.

A 2025 law tweaked Wyoming’s snowmobile user fees to better fund grooming and operations. The rules are simple:

  • Decal required on every sled — resident or nonresident — clearly visible on the outside.

  • Fees: $50 for residents, $75 for nonresidents.

  • Commercial sleds: $150 permit (through the State Trails Field Office in Lander).

You can purchase decals online and have them mailed or picked up at an authorized selling agent statewide. A map of agent locations is on the Wyoming State Trails website.

Launched in 2024, the program’s online system combines registration + decal purchase in one step. You’ll need the year, make, model, and VIN for each sled. Haven’t logged in for a while? If it’s been 90+ days since your last password reset, you’ll be prompted to update it. Finish online first for faster in-person pickup.

Decal revenue keeps more than 2,000 miles of designated snowmobile trails in shape — paying for grooming, signage, equipment upkeep, and trailhead facilities.

“This fee adjustment helps us keep one of the nation’s best snowmobile systems safe and well-groomed for years to come,” said Forrest Kamminga, Wyoming State Trails Program manager.

Trails fill up fast once the snow flies. The program’s top tips:

  • Plan your route and check weather and terrain before you leave.

  • Dress for it: layer up and be ready for rapid changes.

  • Obey signs and carry maps to avoid closures tied to wilderness designations, critical wildlife winter range, and private property.
    – Downloadable maps are available online; paper copies at selling agents and visitor centers.

Key dates

  • Decal validity: July 1 – June 30 each year.

  • Grooming season: typically mid-December through early April, weather permitting.

Part of the Wyoming Department of State Parks & Cultural Resources, the State Trails Program manages 640+ miles of off-road vehicle trails and 2,000+ miles of groomed snowmobile trails, working with land agencies, clubs, and volunteers to keep riding safe, sustainable, and fun.
