Donald Glover has clarified the health scare that forced him to cancel his tour last year, confirming that what he first called an “ailment” was, in fact, a stroke.
Speaking candidly on stage at Tyler, the Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw festival in Los Angeles, Glover told the crowd exactly what happened.
“You guys voted for a ‘where have I been monologue,’” he said. “I had a really bad pain in my head in Louisiana and I did the show anyway. I couldn’t really see well, so when we went to Houston, I went to the hospital and the doctor was like, ‘You had a stroke.’”
The 42-year-old performer, who records music as Childish Gambino, also revealed that doctors discovered “a hole” in his heart, which required two surgeries. He admitted the ordeal left him feeling like he had let fans down, adding that he still has not made it to Ireland as planned.
In a moment that landed with quiet weight, Glover reflected on the scare and its impact.
“They say everybody has two lives and the second life starts when you realize you have one,” he said. “You got one life, guys, and I gotta be honest, the life I’ve lived with you guys has been such a blessing.”
His representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment, but the on-stage confession has already sparked an outpouring of support online, as fans process the gravity behind last year’s sudden pause.
