Wyoming drivers are getting a little extra breathing room every time they pull up to the pump.

For the third straight week, average gas prices across the state dropped again — down 6.5 cents to $2.56 a gallon, according to GasBuddy. That’s not just a tiny wiggle, either: it’s nearly 30 cents cheaper than a month ago, and about 30 cents lower than this time last year, a welcome break as winter travel keeps rolling. (GasBuddy’s state tracker is here: https://www.gasbuddy.com/gasprices/wyoming)

Still, “Wyoming average” hides a lot of local reality. Depending on where you fill up, GasBuddy found prices ranging from $2.12 a gallon at the low end to $3.39 at the high end — a $1.27 spread across the state.

Wyoming isn’t the only place seeing prices ease. Across the US, the average fell 4.5 cents over the past week to $2.85 a gallon. That’s 22 cents lower than a month ago and 12.6 cents cheaper than a year ago. Diesel is also moving down nationally, dropping 5.3 cents to $3.62 a gallon.

GasBuddy’s head of petroleum analysis Patrick De Haan says the trend is doing real damage — in a good way — to what people spend on fuel.

“For the third straight week, the national average price of gasoline has fallen, once again setting a new multi-year low,” De Haan said.

He added prices are at their lowest level since March 2021, saving drivers “hundreds of millions of dollars each week” compared with last year.

And he thinks the soft landing may not be over yet. De Haan said the downward drift could continue into late 2025 as refineries come back online after maintenance and crude prices stay under pressure thanks to increased global supply.

Here’s a quick snapshot of what Wyoming drivers were paying on December 15 in recent years (with the US average in parentheses):

AAA Fuel Prices map
  • 2024: $2.87 (US $2.98);
  • 2023: $2.94 (US $3.05);
  • 2022: $2.98 (US $3.14);
  • 2021: $3.35 (US $3.32);
  • 2020: $2.16 (US $2.20);
  • 2019: $2.66 (US $2.55);
  • 2018: $2.72 (US $2.37);
  • 2017: $2.44 (US $2.43);
  • 2016: $2.06 (US $2.23);
  • 2015: $2.00 (US $2.01).

GasBuddy also tracked price movement in nearby areas:

  • Fort Collins: $2.37 (down 1.1 cents from $2.38);
  • Ogden: $2.69 (down 15.3 cents from $2.84);
  • Billings: $2.86 (down 9.8 cents from $2.96).

Prices are falling, the drop has lasted long enough to feel real, and if the refinery-and-crude dynamics hold, Wyoming drivers may keep catching breaks — at least for now.
