A local housing group is asking the City of Sheridan to help unlock a major chunk of state funding aimed at easing the community’s housing shortage.

During a City Council study session Monday night, Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Christine Dietrich asked councilors to support the Sheridan County Housing Land Trust’s application for a $1.6 million Wyoming Unmet Housing Needs Grant.

Dietrich told the council the land trust is looking to purchase property near Emerson Park, which could be used for future housing development if the grant comes through. The funding would help cover the cost of acquiring the property and moving the project forward.

City backing is a key piece of the application process, and the request is expected to come up for a formal vote at the council’s business meeting on Monday, Jan. 19.

If approved, the city’s support would allow the land trust to submit its application to the state, potentially bringing more than a million dollars into Sheridan to address unmet housing needs in the area.
