Sheridan Dog and Cat Shelter Executive Director AJ Evans says 2025 was a good one – a surprisingly strong year for adoptions and a relief for staff who work every day to pair animals with forever homes.

Speaking on Public Pulse, Evans noted the shelter’s surrender list is current – that’s the public roster of people who want to give up pets – and the team is keeping a close eye on intake so they can act fast when space and resources allow.

Part of the success comes from an inter-shelter transfer program that moves animals around the state. The system brings new dogs into Sheridan’s community and also lets the shelter send pets to other locations where they’re likelier to get adopted. When other shelters need help, Evans says Sheridan gladly takes animals in, too.

Evans doesn’t point to any single reason for the uptick – no big trend jumped out at her – but she’s clearly grateful.

“I’m thankful so many community members found new family members in 2025,” she said.
