Bam Adebayo delivered a performance few saw coming on Tuesday night, erupting for 83 points in Miami’s game against the Washington Wizards — the second-highest scoring performance in NBA history.
The Miami Heat centre put together a stat line that looked almost unreal in real time. Adebayo finished the night shooting 20-for-43 from the field and 7-for-22 from three-point range. At the free-throw line, he was relentless, converting 36 of 43 attempts — accounting for nearly half of his total points.
Before the game, the 28-year-old had been averaging 18.9 points per game this season, placing him outside the league’s top 40 scorers. By the end of the night, he had produced one of the most explosive scoring performances the sport has ever seen.
With the 83-point outing, Adebayo passed Kobe Bryant’s iconic 81-point game from 2006 and now sits second on the NBA’s all-time single-game scoring list, trailing only Wilt Chamberlain’s legendary 100-point performance.
After the game, Adebayo reflected on the significance of surpassing Bryant — a player he admired growing up.
“To be 83 and passing [Bryant], in my mind, it’s like, what would he say to me? Because I’ve always wanted to have a conversation with him,” Adebayo said. “He’ll probably say, ‘Go do it again.’
“Just a surreal moment being in the company with somebody that you idolised growing up.”
The historic night quickly drew reactions from across the basketball world.
“BAM BAM BAM ,” LeBron James posted on X.
Jalen Brunson reacted in disbelief, writing: “Bro, what?”
Former Miami Heat legend Dwyane Wade celebrated the moment as well, posting: “83 for Cap”.
Kevin Durant also praised the performance when asked about it after his own game.
“I couldn’t believe it when I was hearing about it in real time. He got 30 in the first quarter … Congratulations to Bam. I know how much work he puts in.
“I looked at the statsheet, and it’s pretty crazy, 40 shots, 40 free throws, 20 threes, that takes a lot of stamina man, that takes a lot of energy to not only go out there to put those shots up, but also make them to set the record to surpass Kobe [Bryant] as the second-highest scorer in the history of the game,” Durant said.
The night ended with Adebayo standing among some of the greatest names the league has ever seen.
