CASPER, Wyo. — Central Wyoming’s unseasonably aggressive spring continues this week as a Fire Weather Watch has been declared for Casper, Johnson and Fremont counties through Wednesday evening.
According to the National Weather Service, a surge of southwest winds gusting up to 48 mph will coincide with an 82-degree high Wednesday afternoon, marking a peak in the week’s fire danger before a major cold front arrives Thursday to drop temperatures back into the 50s.
The watch is in effect from Wednesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. Meteorologists are expecting west winds between 30 and 40 mph with gusts reaching 65 mph. When combined with humidity levels as low as 13% and temperatures climbing into the upper 70s and low 80s, the NWS warns that any fires that start could grow erratically.
The forecast for Casper remains calm but warm today, with a high near 68 and light winds. The warming trend will continue Tuesday as highs reach 74 and wind gusts increase to 33 mph. Wednesday will bring sunny skies and the week’s peak temperature of 82, but also the strongest winds.
Relief from the heat arrives Wednesday night when a cold front moves south across the state. The front will drop Thursday’s high to 59, with overnight lows returning to the 30s. While some light rain may fall in far northern Wyoming, the central part of the state is expected to remain dry through the end of the work week.
