Lewandowski seals late win as Barca tighten grip on La Liga

Barcelona left it late, but not too late. A scrappy, instinctive finish from Robert Lewandowski in the 87th minute secured a 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid and pushed the Catalan side seven points clear at the top of La Liga.
The timing mattered as much as the goal itself. Earlier in the day, Real Madrid had slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Mallorca, opening the door for Barcelona to stretch their lead — and they took it.
The match in Madrid unfolded with a familiar tension. Atletico struck first, with Giuliano Simeone timing his run perfectly to break behind the defence and finish decisively in the 39th minute. But the lead barely settled. Just three minutes later, Marcus Rashford combined with Dani Olmo and drove in the equaliser, marking one of his most decisive contributions since arriving on loan.
The game turned just before half-time when Atletico’s Nico Gonzalez was sent off for hauling down Lamine Yamal as he surged toward goal. From that point, the script seemed straightforward: Barcelona with the ball, Atletico defending deep with 10 men.
But it didn’t play out cleanly. Despite their numerical advantage, Barcelona struggled to convert pressure into clear chances. Ferran Torres came close twice, only to be denied by Juan Musso, while earlier misses from Fermin Lopez and a shot off the post from Yamal hinted at a night where execution lagged behind intent.
There was even a moment of confusion when Barcelona’s Gerard Martin was initially sent off early in the second half, only for VAR to overturn the decision — a call that left Atletico furious but kept the balance intact.
As the clock ticked down, it felt like one of those matches that slips away. Then came the decisive moment. Joao Cancelo cut into the box, his effort was parried, and Lewandowski reacted quickest — bundling the ball in with his shoulder from close range.
It wasn’t pretty, but it didn’t need to be.
For Barcelona, the win is less about style and more about control. With a seven-point cushion and momentum on their side, they have moved a step closer to defending the title.
