Sir Elton John, 77, revealed on Sunday that he has been struggling to fully enjoy his new musical, “The Devil Wears Prada,” due to recent vision loss caused by an infection, The Associated Press reports.
Attending the opening night performance at London’s Dominion Theatre, the singer-songwriter shared his experience with the audience.
“I haven’t been able to come to many of the previews because, as you know, I have lost my eyesight,” John explained. “So it’s hard for me to see it, but I love to hear it and, boy, it sounded good tonight.”
John first disclosed his vision problems in September, revealing an infection had left him with limited vision in one eye. He posted on Instagram that while he is undergoing treatment, the healing process is slow.
The musical, for which John composed the score, is based on the popular 2006 film about a young journalist working at a high-fashion magazine. The London production stars Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly, the iconic role played by Meryl Streep in the movie.
Sunday’s gala performance served as a fundraiser for the Elton John AIDS Foundation and drew a star-studded crowd, including fashion designer Donatella Versace and Anna Wintour, the former editor of Vogue and rumored inspiration for the character of Miranda Priestly. Wintour described the musical as “entertaining.”
