Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has introduced its latest AI chatbot, Grok 3, which boasts significant improvements in reasoning, computational power, and functionality.

Launched on February 18, 2025, the chatbot is described by Musk as “scary smart” and is expected to compete with leading AI models, including OpenAI’s GPT-4o and DeepSeek’s AI.

Key Features of Grok 3:

  1. Enhanced Reasoning and Computational Power
Grok 3 is ten times more powerful than its predecessor, utilizing 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, which provided 200 million GPU-hours for training. This increased computational strength allows for more accurate and faster processing of large datasets.

  2. Inspired by Science Fiction
The name “Grok” originates from Robert Heinlein’s novel Stranger in a Strange Land, where it means to fully understand something in a deep and intuitive way. Musk emphasized that this represents the empathy and comprehension embedded in Grok 3.

  3. A Challenger in the AI Race
Positioned as xAI’s answer to OpenAI’s GPT-4o and Google’s Gemini models, Grok 3 has demonstrated advanced capabilities in science, coding, and mathematics, reportedly outperforming Gemini 2 Pro, DeepSeek V3, and GPT-4o in benchmark tests.

  4. Creative and Game-Generating Abilities
Beyond traditional AI functions, Grok 3 has displayed creativity, including generating original game ideas. One such example combines elements of Tetris and Puyo Puyo into a new puzzle game.

  5. Available on X (Formerly Twitter)
Grok 3 is now accessible to Premium Plus subscribers on X, Musk’s social media platform. Additionally, a new subscription tier called “Super Grok” will offer early access to advanced features through a dedicated website (grok.com) and app.

  6. Future Updates and Voice Interaction
Musk hinted at ongoing improvements, with daily updates expected. A voice interaction feature is currently being tested, aiming to allow natural conversations with the AI. This feature is set to launch in about a week.

  7. Live-Streamed Launch Event
The launch event, held on February 17, 2025, attracted nearly 100,000 live viewers, where Musk and the xAI team showcased Grok 3’s abilities and new features.

  8. Deep Search – A New AI-Powered Search Engine
Alongside Grok 3, xAI introduced Deep Search, a next-generation AI-driven search engine designed to provide more intelligent and relevant search results.

  9. Competition with OpenAI and DeepSeek
Grok 3’s release comes amid ongoing competition between xAI, OpenAI, and emerging AI developers like China’s DeepSeek. Musk, who was previously involved in OpenAI’s founding, has been vocal about rivaling OpenAI’s dominance in the AI space.

  10. Colossus Supercomputer for AI Training
xAI is leveraging its Colossus supercomputer, powered by over 100,000 Nvidia GPUs, to train its AI models. The company doubled its GPU cluster size specifically for Grok 3’s development, highlighting the scale of its AI ambitions.
