Amidst ongoing efforts to foster peace in Europe, the Trump administration is actively pursuing a mutually beneficial agreement with Ukraine regarding its critical mineral resources, Al Jazeera reports.

National Security Advisor Mike Waltz emphasized the importance of Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky returning to the negotiating table to finalize a deal that could strengthen both nations.

“President Trump is obviously very engaged in finding a path forward with President Zelensky,” Waltz said during a press briefing on Thursday. “We believe there’s a real opportunity here to create a win-win situation.”

The proposed agreement would involve US investment in Ukraine’s rich mineral deposits, potentially helping to rebuild the Ukrainian economy while securing vital resources for American industries. The move is framed as a way for Ukraine to leverage its natural assets to ensure its long-term stability and resilience, as well as a compensation of billions of funding provided for Kyiv war efforts by the Biden administration.

The administration’s commitment to finding a resolution was underscored by Lieutenant General Keith Kellogg’s recent visit to Kyiv. While a planned joint press conference was adjusted in format, Ukrainian presidential spokesperson Serhii Nikiforov described the talks as productive. Zelensky himself acknowledged a “good and detailed” conversation with Kellogg, focusing on potential agreements related to security and investment.

These developments come as President Trump seeks to reshape US foreign policy, prioritizing a more balanced approach to international relations. He recently sent officials to meet with Russian counterparts in Saudi Arabia.

Vice President JD Vance defended President Trump’s approach, highlighting his skills as “an effective negotiator” who leaves no stone unturned. Vance expressed optimism about the prospects for peace:

“I really believe we’re on the cusp of peace in Europe for the first time in three years.”
