During his address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, President Donald Trump revisited the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland, extending an invitation to the island’s inhabitants to join the US, Fox News reports.

Despite widespread skepticism and previous dismissals, Trump used a portion of his speech to directly address the people of Greenland.

“And I also have a message tonight for the incredible people of Greenland. We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America,” he declared.

The President justified the potential acquisition by citing national security concerns.

“For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity,” he stated, echoing a sentiment he previously expressed on social media platform Truth Social in December.

Trump further promised economic benefits to Greenland should it choose to become a part of the US:

“We will keep you safe. We will make you rich. And together we will take Greenland to heights like you have never thought possible before.” He added that the US needs the island “for national security and even international security.”

This renewed push for Greenland comes after previous public statements from Trump expressing his desire to purchase the island. In January, he posted on Truth Social:

“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation. We will protect it, and cherish it, from a very vicious outside World. MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”

The inclusion of the Greenland proposal in a nationally televised address to Congress is particularly notable given that Greenland is currently an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. According to the official website of Denmark, “Greenland has its own extensive local government, but it is also part of the Realm of Denmark.”
