The Wyoming State Treasurer’s Office has shared information regarding potential delays in tax refunds due to upcoming IRS layoffs, KGAB AM 650 reports.

With more than 6,000 IRS employees set to be laid off just before tax season, officials are advising taxpayers to prepare for possible longer wait times.

On social media, the Treasurer’s Office referenced a USA Today article detailing the situation and encouraged residents to file their taxes early.

According to experts, the IRS workforce reduction could lead to:

  • Delays in refund processing – Paper tax returns, which typically take six to eight weeks to process, may take significantly longer.
  • Longer customer service wait times – IRS helplines, already known for extended wait times, could become even more difficult to reach.
  • Potential closure of in-person IRS service centers, making it harder for individuals to seek assistance.
  • Slower processing of mailed correspondences, including amendments or requests for additional information.

The deadline to file 2024 tax returns is Tuesday, April 15, 2025. Taxpayers can request an extension, which grants them until October 15, 2025, to file without penalties. However, failing to meet the deadline without an extension could result in penalties of 5% per month, up to 25% of the unpaid balance.

For those in need of help filing their taxes, the United Way of Natrona County is offering free tax preparation assistance. IRS-trained and certified volunteers are providing basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing for qualified individuals until April 5, 2025.
