The Wyoming Cowboys staged an impressive second-half rally but ultimately fell to Mountain West Preseason favorite Boise State, 67-58, on Tuesday evening in the Arena-Auditorium, University of Wyoming Athletics reports.
The loss snapped Wyoming’s three-game winning streak and marked their first home defeat of the season.
“We got the game we wanted, but we just didn’t get the outcome we wanted,” said Wyoming head coach Sundance Wicks. “We’ve been in a lot of these games, and teams have to go through things and carry that over in the future. We have some toughness, and that’s what seasoned teams have — we need to find some more.”
Wyoming shot 35.1% from the field, including nine three-pointers, with six coming in the second half. Boise State countered with 45.7% shooting and eight three-pointers at a 40% clip. The Broncos dominated the glass with a 41-28 rebounding advantage, while Wyoming minimized errors with a season-low seven turnovers.
Key Performances
- A.J. Wills: Came off the bench to notch a career-high 17 points, sinking five three-pointers on 5-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc.
- Obi Agbim: Contributed 14 points, maintaining his streak of scoring in double figures in every game this season.
- Dontaie Allen: Scored eight points, including two three-pointers, bringing his total to eight in conference play.
- Matija Belic: Tied a career-high with six rebounds while adding critical free throws during the second-half surge.
The Cowboys struggled offensively in the opening minutes, trailing 11-2 after a three-minute scoring drought. A six-minute dry spell later extended Boise State’s lead to 17-5 before Wyoming responded with a 10-0 run fueled by Abou Magassa’s slam and threes from Agbim and Wills. Despite the late surge, the Cowboys entered halftime down 25-19 after shooting just 24% from the field.
Wyoming opened the second half with renewed intensity, narrowing the gap to four points on multiple occasions. A three-pointer by Wills gave the Cowboys a 39-38 lead midway through the period, their first of the game. However, Boise State quickly responded with a three-pointer and pushed their advantage to as many as eight points in the closing minutes. Despite a late push, the Broncos secured the victory at the free-throw line.
Boise State’s Alvaro Cardenas led all scorers with 19 points and added six assists, while Tyson Degenhart contributed 16 points and nine rebounds.
Wyoming (6-4) will look to bounce back as they travel to take on Front Range rival Air Force on Saturday at 3 p.m. in Clune Arena.
