A recent study by Baldwin Digital highlights Wyoming as the top state in the US for minority-owned businesses per capita, showcasing the state’s strong entrepreneurial environment for its diverse population, Wyoming News Now reports.
Wyoming boasts 34.53 minority-owned businesses per 1,000 minority residents, the highest rate in the nation. Using 2021 US Census data, the study found that the state is home to 1,376 minority-owned businesses, representing a significant portion of the local economy.
Among these businesses:
- Asian entrepreneurs account for over a third, owning 543 businesses.
- American Indians and Alaska Natives own 152 businesses, further contributing to the state’s vibrant business community.
Following Wyoming, Florida and California ranked second and third in minority business ownership per capita. These states have long been recognized for their diverse and entrepreneurial populations. In contrast, states like Mississippi and South Dakota were found to have the lowest rates of minority-owned businesses per capita.
Interestingly, the Western US emerged as a regional leader, with seven of the top 10 states for minority business ownership located in the region.
The study underscores the critical role of support systems in fostering minority-owned businesses. Programs such as government grants, the Minority Business Development Agency, and the National Minority Supplier Development Council provide essential resources to help entrepreneurs thrive.
Experts also emphasize the importance of continued investment in financial and community support networks to maintain and expand opportunities for minority entrepreneurs nationwide.
