Aaron Rodgers has made his decision for the 2025 NFL season: the four-time MVP quarterback is reportedly signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to multiple reports.
Rodgers informed the Steelers he will travel to Pittsburgh on Friday, with plans to officially sign ahead of the team’s upcoming minicamp next week, NFL Network reported. He is also expected to participate in minicamp to begin acclimating to his new teammates, coaching staff, and offensive system.
The veteran quarterback’s decision comes after a tumultuous two-year stint with the New York Jets. Rodgers suffered a torn Achilles in his first game with the Jets in 2023, derailing their highly anticipated season. Although he returned healthy for 2024, the team finished with a disappointing 5–12 record, prompting the Jets to move on this offseason.
Despite speculation that retirement could be imminent, Rodgers remained open to continuing his career, and several quarterback-needy teams monitored his status. Ultimately, the Steelers emerged as the front-runner, with head coach Mike Tomlin calling a March meeting with Rodgers “productive.” NFL Network added that contract parameters between the two parties had “been in place for months.”
Rodgers has publicly stated he would be willing to play the 2025 season for \$20 million. Details of his upcoming deal with Pittsburgh have not yet been disclosed.
The Steelers’ decision to wait until the sixth round of the NFL Draft to select Ohio State quarterback Will Howard signaled a willingness to bring in a veteran starter. The team passed on earlier-round quarterback prospects, including Shedeur Sanders, fueling speculation of a potential deal with Rodgers.
Rodgers will now lead an offense coordinated by Arthur Smith, although he won’t have George Pickens at his disposal — the talented wide receiver was traded to the Dallas Cowboys earlier this offseason. Instead, Pittsburgh acquired Pro Bowl wideout D.K. Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks to fill the role. Rodgers will also be working with tight end Pat Freiermuth, wide receivers Robert Woods and Calvin Austin, and a promising young backfield that includes Jaylen Warren and rookie Kaleb Johnson.
Despite a rocky start to 2024, Rodgers finished strong, throwing 18 touchdowns and just four interceptions over his final 10 games. He’ll turn 42 in December and is aiming to guide his third NFL team into playoff contention in what could be the final chapter of his storied career.
Rodgers spent 18 seasons with the Green Bay Packers before being traded to New York, where high hopes ultimately gave way to frustration.
