A teenager in Columbia County, Oregon, was arrested late last month after federal and local authorities uncovered an alleged plan to carry out a mass shooting and bombing at a shopping mall in Washington state.
According to the FBI, the suspect—whose name has not been released due to their age—was arrested on May 22 by deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest came just two days after the FBI received a tip about what it described as a “detailed and imminent” attack.
Working swiftly with local law enforcement, the FBI identified the teen on May 20 as the individual behind the threat. The suspect had reportedly shared their extremist ideology and attack plans in online chats, prompting the FBI to initiate court-authorized surveillance to ensure public safety.
A federal search warrant was executed on May 22, which led to the suspect’s arrest on state charges. The FBI said the teenager had developed a specific plan to target the Three Rivers Mall in Kelso, Washington—more than two hours south of Seattle.
Investigators said the plot involved setting off an improvised chlorine bomb to trigger mass panic, followed by a shooting spree aimed at moviegoers exiting the theater. The plan allegedly ended with the teen intending to take their own life at a pre-selected location within the mall.
“This plot was as serious as it gets,” said FBI Portland Special Agent in Charge Doug Olson. “We, along with our partners, moved swiftly to interrupt this violent plan and to protect our community.”
Officials confirmed the suspect had both the intent and means to follow through with the plan, which included maps of the mall and a detailed attack route.
The Columbia County District Attorney’s Office is now handling the prosecution.
Authorities stressed the importance of public vigilance and communication, encouraging individuals to report suspicious behavior. The FBI also urged parents to have open conversations with their children about online safety and activity.
