A manhunt is underway for Joseph A. Couch, a 32-year-old suspect believed to be responsible for a shooting incident on Saturday that injured five people near Interstate 75 in southeastern Kentucky, CBS News reports.

The shooting took place around 5:30 p.m. local time near Exit 49, according to Kentucky State Police. Witnesses reported seeing multiple vehicles pulled over on the side of the highway. Troopers found nine vehicles had been struck by gunfire, with five people sustaining injuries.

Authorities believe the shooter was not in a vehicle at the time of the incident, and that the shooting was not a targeted attack, but rather a random act of violence.

All five victims, who suffered injuries ranging from a gunshot to the face to a seriously wounded arm, are in stable condition and are expected to survive, according to Kentucky State Police spokesperson, Lloyd Acciardo.

Authorities initially identified Couch as a person of interest but later named him as the suspect. They are actively searching for him in a remote area north of London, a community of about 8,000 people roughly 75 miles south of Lexington.

Couch is considered armed and dangerous. Authorities have warned the public not to approach him if spotted.

The investigation has revealed that Couch has a military background, having served in the National Guard for at least four years. He has a minimal criminal history, including a traffic ticket and a dismissed charge of terroristic threats.

A silver SUV registered to Couch was found on Saturday night, with a rifle case inside. An AR rifle, legally purchased, was later found near the vehicle. Authorities are still concerned that Couch may have additional firearms.
