Amid a surge in violence in Gaza and Lebanon, US President Joe Biden has reiterated his unwavering support for Israel during a phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Al Jazeera reports, citing the White House.

The 30-minute conversation, the first publicly disclosed exchange between the leaders since August, also included Vice President Kamala Harris, who is currently campaigning for the presidency. The White House statement stressed President Biden’s “ironclad commitment to Israel’s security,” condemning Iran’s recent ballistic missile attack on Israel and emphasizing the need for a “diplomatic solution” to the Lebanese crisis.

The call comes as Israel considers potential military action against Iran in response to a barrage of missiles launched by Iran last week, targeting Israeli military sites. The attack, which Iran described as retaliation for the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and the assassinations of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and an Iranian general in Beirut, prompted the US administration to vow “severe consequences” for Iran.

While affirming Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, which has launched thousands of rockets into Israel, Biden expressed concern for Lebanese civilians. The US, however, has suggested it is no longer pursuing a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah, citing the Lebanese group’s weakened position.

Despite the ongoing conflicts, the Biden administration continues to provide unconditional military and diplomatic support to Israel, including a substantial $3.8 billion annual military aid package and an additional $14 billion authorized to assist Israel’s war efforts.

The US stance on the situation in Lebanon has drawn criticism from some quarters, with concerns raised about the potential for civilian casualties and the escalating humanitarian crisis. The White House, however, maintains its support for the Israeli offensive in Lebanon, arguing that it is necessary to counter Hezbollah’s aggression.

As the conflict in Lebanon intensifies, Israel continues its military campaign in Gaza, further exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in both territories.
