Arab American voters in the traditionally Democratic stronghold of Dearborn, Michigan, swung decisively toward Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election, contributing to his victory in the state and a national comeback, The Associated Press reports.

This dramatic shift marks a significant change from the 2020 election, where Joe Biden won Dearborn by a near 3-to-1 margin.

The swing in Dearborn, where nearly half of the 110,000 residents are of Arab descent, can be traced back to the Biden-Harris administration’s unwavering support for Israel during the brutal war in Gaza. Local Democrats had warned for months that this stance would alienate Arab American voters, who felt their concerns were ignored.

Trump, meanwhile, actively courted the Arab American vote, visiting a Lebanese-owned restaurant in Dearborn and pledging to find a way to end the violence in the Middle East.

While some voters remained apprehensive about Trump, others found his outreach and promises more appealing than the perceived inaction of the Biden-Harris administration.

The shift was further amplified by the Trump campaign’s outreach to Arab American leaders and their subsequent endorsements. Amer Ghalib, the Democratic Muslim mayor of Hamtramck, a neighboring city, endorsed Trump, followed by several imams and Muslim leaders.

The final week of the campaign saw a surge in support for Trump, fueled by former President Bill Clinton’s controversial remarks at a rally in Michigan, where he criticized Hamas and defended Israel’s actions.

While Trump’s victory in Dearborn and Michigan was ultimately attributed to a complex mix of factors, the Arab American community’s disillusionment with the Democratic Party, combined with Trump’s targeted outreach and promises, proved decisive.
