As Boeing prepares to issue layoff notices to 10% of its workforce, uncertainty looms over thousands of employees affected by this latest restructuring move, KOMO News reports.

Notices are expected to be sent this week, with impacted employees set to leave the company by January 17. The layoffs, which will affect approximately 17,000 workers out of Boeing’s total 170,000 employees, come shortly after the company reached a new labor agreement with machinists, signaling a complex period of transition for the aerospace giant.

Just last week, Boeing machinists voted to end a seven-week strike, securing a new labor contract with a 38% wage increase spread over four years. This agreement brought 33,000 machinists back to work, providing a significant boost to local economies in areas such as Everett and Renton, Washington. However, as part of its ongoing adjustments, Boeing announced that it would be moving forward with planned layoffs, underscoring the challenges it continues to face.

The layoff process has been marked by speculation and limited information. A spokesperson from the International Association of Machinists (IAM) District 751 said that the union has not yet received any specifics about which positions will be impacted. Boeing has similarly declined to provide further details on the roles that will be affected, though it did confirm that most US employees affected will be notified by mid-November.

In recent years, Boeing has struggled with multiple financial and operational hurdles, including a reported $25 billion in losses since 2019. Issues with safety, regulatory scrutiny, and company culture have also put pressure on the company as it seeks to restructure and streamline operations. Boeing spokespersons have said that the company is committed to providing severance pay and career transition resources to help departing employees.
