A series of mysterious drone sightings across New Jersey and parts of Pennsylvania have sparked a major investigation, leaving state and federal officials baffled, The Associated Press reports.
The drones, described as unusually large – up to six feet in diameter – have evaded detection by traditional methods, according to Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia (R-Morris), who was briefed on the situation Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security.
The sightings, which began last month and have intensified recently, have raised concerns among residents and officials alike. The drones’ flight paths have included areas near the Picatinny Arsenal, a US military research facility, and President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster.
Assemblywoman Fantasia stated that the drones’ size and sophisticated evasion tactics suggest they are not operated by hobbyists. While drones are legal in New Jersey, they are subject to FAA regulations and require operator certification. Many of the observed drones exceed the typical size of hobbyist models. Officials acknowledge that some reported sightings may have been misidentified aircraft.
The FBI is leading the investigation and has urged residents to share any relevant information, including videos and photographs. Despite the unsettling nature of the situation, Governor Phil Murphy and law enforcement have emphasized that there is no apparent threat to public safety at this time.
However, two Republican congressmen, Reps. Chris Smith and Jeff Van Drew, have called for military intervention, advocating that the military shoot down the drones. Rep. Smith cited a recent incident where a Coast Guard vessel was followed by a dozen drones near Barnegat Light. While the Coast Guard confirmed observing multiple low-altitude aircraft, they did not consider them an immediate threat.
The Pentagon, however, has said that its initial assessment suggests the drones are not linked to foreign adversaries. This contradicts the concerns expressed by several lawmakers, who have called for stricter regulations on drone operation in the state, with at least one proposing a temporary statewide ban.
