Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, has called the US government inefficient and suggested using artificial intelligence (AI) to replace the functions currently performed by some public sector workers, as per Bloomberg.

The remarks were made during a closed-door session at the Milken Institute Global Conference on Sunday, according to a person who attended the event.

In a wide-ranging conversation with financier Michael Milken, Musk also discussed his brain-implant company, Neuralink, and the latest advancements at SpaceX.

Musk’s comments come as he prepares to step down from his leadership role at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a flagship project of the Trump administration. DOGE was established with the goal of reducing the federal workforce, cutting costs, and dismantling agencies, including the US Agency for International Development. Musk has stated in recent weeks that his work with DOGE is nearing completion.

Pressure Mounts for Musk to Refocus on Tesla

The Tesla CEO is facing growing pressure to dedicate more of his time to the electric carmaker. Declining sales and investor concerns over Musk’s divided attention have prompted calls for him to refocus on the company. During a recent earnings call, Musk announced that he would be devoting significantly more of his time to Tesla starting in May.

The Milken Institute Global Conference, now in its 28th year, brings together leading financial figures, policymakers, and celebrities in Beverly Hills. The conference serves as a forum to explore the intersection of business and global challenges. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent is scheduled to open the sessions on Monday with a discussion on global capital markets.
