Mahmoud Khalil Files $20 Million Claim Against Trump Over Wrongful Detention

Mahmoud Khalil, a New York businessman, has filed a $20 million legal claim against President Donald Trump, accusing him of wrongful detention following Khalil’s arrest at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida.
Khalil alleges that he was detained for nearly 24 hours without being charged, fingerprinted, or granted legal counsel during a visit in February 2023. His legal notice argues that he was held on “trumped-up accusations” after being stopped by security and local law enforcement, despite having proper clearance. Khalil seeks compensation for damages including emotional distress, reputational harm, and legal expenses.
The claim cites alleged civil rights violations, asserting that Khalil was denied due process and subjected to an unjustified detention without formal charges or access to a lawyer. His attorney contends that the detainment was arbitrary, leading to significant personal and professional impact.
Trump’s legal team has yet to respond to the claim. Under Florida law, Khalil’s notice must be addressed within six months before filing a formal lawsuit, unless Trump agrees to settle. The filing initiates a potential legal confrontation over the events at Mar‑a‑Lago and raises questions about security protocols applied to visitors at private estates with public and political significance.
