The White House has launched an extensive review of the Smithsonian Institution’s museums and exhibitions ahead of next year’s 250th anniversary of the United States, aiming to ensure they reflect President Donald Trump’s vision of U.S. history and “American exceptionalism.”

In a letter sent Tuesday to Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie Bunch III, the administration outlined steps to align museum narratives with the president’s interpretation of America’s founding ideals. The review will cover public-facing materials — from exhibition texts and social media posts to educational resources — to “assess tone, historical framing, and alignment with American ideals.”

“This initiative aims to ensure alignment with the President’s directive to celebrate American exceptionalism, remove divisive or partisan narratives, and restore confidence in our shared cultural institutions,” the letter said.

The Smithsonian responded that it remains committed to “scholarly excellence, rigorous research, and the accurate, factual presentation of history,” adding that it will review the White House’s request “with this commitment in mind” and continue constructive collaboration with the administration, Congress, and its Board of Regents.

The review is part of the Restoring Truth and Sanity to American History Executive Order Trump signed in March. It will begin with eight flagship institutions, including the National Museum of American History, the National Museum of Natural History, the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the National Museum of the American Indian, the National Air and Space Museum, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the National Portrait Gallery, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.

While some Democratic lawmakers have criticised the move, calling it “whitewashing,” the administration says it is about unifying the country under a shared narrative and ensuring that America’s achievements are celebrated rather than undermined.
