BLM Sets December Oil and Gas Lease Sale in Wyoming, Public Protest Window Now Open

The Bureau of Land Management’s Wyoming office announced Thursday that it will hold an oil and gas lease sale on Dec. 3, 2025, putting 86 parcels across 79,169 acres of Wyoming land on the table.

This move follows months of prep work: the BLM finished its scoping process in May and wrapped up a public comment period in July. Now comes the next step—a 30-day public protest period that runs through Sept. 27, giving residents and stakeholders another chance to weigh in.

Leasing doesn’t mean drilling starts tomorrow. Before any rigs move in, operators must file a permit to drill application, which details their development plans. Those applications trigger another round of review: the BLM posts them for public comment, completes environmental analyses, and works with state officials, tribes, and other stakeholders.

Every parcel up for lease comes with stipulations designed to protect natural resources, the agency noted.

The parcels under review, along with maps and instructions for filing a protest, are available on the BLM’s ePlanning website: BLM ePlanning Project Page.

Lease sales are conducted online through EnergyNet, and more details on current and upcoming sales can be found in the National Fluid Lease Sale System.

The BLM manages about 245 million acres of public land—mostly in the West—and oversees 700 million acres of subsurface mineral estate nationwide. The agency says its mission is to balance energy development with conservation, ensuring public lands remain productive for future generations.
