President-elect Donald Trump has demanded that any Republican Senator seeking the leadership position must agree to allow him to appoint cabinet officials without confirmation votes, Al Jazeera reports.
Trump issued his directive via his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday.
“Any Republican Senator seeking the coveted LEADERSHIP position in the United States Senate must agree to Recess Appointments (in the Senate!)”, Trump wrote. “We need positions filled IMMEDIATELY!”
The President-elect’s demand is a direct challenge to the Senate’s current practice of holding brief “pro-forma” sessions during extended recesses to prevent presidents from making recess appointments. This practice was established after a 2014 Supreme Court ruling limited the president’s power to bypass Senate confirmation.
Trump’s call for recess appointments has sparked immediate reactions from the three Republican Senators vying for the leadership position: Rick Scott of Florida, John Cornyn of Texas, and John Thune of South Dakota.
Senator Scott, backed by several close Trump allies, swiftly responded:
“100% agree. I will do whatever it takes to get your nominations through as quickly as possible.”
Senator Cornyn echoed the President-elect’s sentiments, stating that recess appointments are constitutionally allowed and that it is “unacceptable” for Democrats to block Trump’s appointments.
Senator Thune agreed that Republican nominees must be “quickly and decisively” put in place, adding that “all options are on the table to make that happen, including recess appointments.”
Trump also issued a call to halt all pending judicial nominations, claiming that Democrats are “looking to ram through their Judges as the Republicans fight over Leadership.”
The President-elect’s demands come at a crucial moment as Republicans prepare to take control of the Senate in January. With a razor-thin majority expected, Trump’s influence and approval will be paramount in shaping the Republican agenda. His stance on recess appointments has now become a key issue in the leadership race, with all three candidates publicly indicating a willingness to reconsider the practice.
The upcoming Senate leadership election, scheduled for Wednesday, will determine the direction of the chamber and the fate of Trump’s cabinet appointments.
