At least six Kenyan police personnel have been killed and four others injured following an attack on a police camp in Garissa County, eastern Kenya, Al Jazeera reports.
Authorities suspect fighters from the Somalia-based al-Shabab group are responsible.
According to a Kenyan police report released on Sunday, the attack occurred around dawn and targeted a camp housing police reservists. The attackers reportedly used a variety of weapons to overwhelm the camp. Garissa County is located on the border with Somalia.
The incident follows a recent travel advisory issued by the United States embassy, cautioning against travel to certain areas of Kenya, including Garissa County, due to the perceived threat of attacks.
Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked group, has been engaged in a long-running conflict to overthrow the central government of Somalia and establish a rule of law based on its interpretation of Islamic Sharia law.
The group recently claimed responsibility for a roadside bomb explosion near Somalia’s presidential palace on Tuesday. In March, al-Shabab fighters also stormed a hotel in central Somalia where government officials and tribal leaders were meeting to discuss strategies to combat the group. Several casualties were reported in that attack.
