Across the US, people are packing up and moving — sometimes just down the road, sometimes across the country. But in Wyoming, a lot of folks are staying right where they started, WV News reports.
Fresh data from the US Census Bureau shows more than half of movers nationwide never actually leave their county. Add in those who stick to their state, and you’ve got three-quarters of Americans moving without really moving far. Millennials and Gen Z especially are choosing to live in their hometowns, often for family ties, affordability, or just plain comfort.
Wyoming is no exception — and in some counties, the majority of residents were born right there in the Cowboy State. Stacker crunched the numbers to rank which counties have the highest share of homegrown locals.
Here are the highlights:
23. Teton County – Not surprisingly, the least “local” county. Only 21.5% of folks were Wyoming-born, while a whopping 65% moved in from elsewhere. Blame the ski slopes and luxury lifestyle.
15. Park County – Home to Cody and Yellowstone’s east gate, about 40% of residents are Wyoming natives.
10. Weston County – Nearly 45% of its 6,800 residents were born in-state.
5. Natrona County – Casper keeps it close, with 49% born in Wyoming.
1. Fremont County – Leading the pack, 52.9% of residents are native Wyomingites. That’s more than 20,000 people who never strayed far from home.
Overall, the numbers show a strong “born and bred” streak in Wyoming. Despite all the headlines about people leaving big cities and chasing new starts elsewhere, many in the Cowboy State prefer to stay planted — close to family, land, and a lifestyle they know.
So if you’ve ever wondered where the most die-hard Wyoming locals live, look no further than Fremont, Big Horn, and Washakie counties. They’re about as Wyoming as it gets.
