Trump threatens $1bn lawsuit against BBC over edited documentary

US President Donald Trump is threatening to sue the BBC for $1bn, accusing the British broadcaster of defamation over a Panorama documentary that aired just days before the 2024 US election. The film, Trump: A Second Chance?, spliced together clips from Trump’s January 6, 2021 speech in a way critics say suggested he directly incited the Capitol riot.
In a letter sent this week, Trump’s attorney Alejandro Brito demanded the BBC issue a full retraction and “appropriately compensate President Trump for the harm caused” by what he called “false, defamatory, misleading, and inflammatory statements.” The letter warned that if the BBC failed to comply by Friday, legal action would follow in Florida.
“The BBC is on notice. PLEASE GOVERN YOURSELF ACCORDINGLY,” the letter said, a phrase that quickly went viral on social media.
The BBC confirmed it had received the letter and said it was “reviewing and will respond directly in due course.”
Still, Trump’s chances of winning a US defamation case are slim. Even if Trump attempted to sue in the UK, any judgment would be unenforceable in the US under the 2010 SPEECH Act, which bars recognition of foreign rulings that conflict with free-speech protections.
The controversy has already triggered major fallout inside the BBC. Director-General Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness both resigned amid accusations that the editing of Trump’s speech violated editorial standards and fed perceptions of political bias.
In the Panorama film, Trump appears to say: “We’re going to walk down to the Capitol and I’ll be there with you, and we fight. We fight like hell.”
In reality, the “fight like hell” comment was made nearly an hour later and unrelated to his call to march.
Trump, who has long accused mainstream outlets of “fake news,” seized on the documentary as proof of political persecution. “They lied, they edited, they got caught,” he told supporters during a campaign rally in Florida on Sunday. “We’re going to make them pay for it — big time.”
