Casper police finish first wave of community chats, say they’re bringing back “old-school” policing

The Casper Police Department just wrapped up the first set of neighborhood meetings as part of a new push to refocus on what they call “old-school” police work — and residents had plenty to say.
Officers spent the last few weeks meeting face-to-face with people across town, listening to concerns and talking about public safety priorities. That outreach is part of a department initiative meant to get cops out of the station and back into neighborhoods, building relationships and tackling the day-to-day issues folks care about most.
During the sessions, residents brought up things ranging from traffic safety and loud vehicles to downtown crime and general neighborhood concerns — everyday stuff that sometimes gets lost when the focus is on big, headline cases. Casper police leaders say those everyday issues matter to people, and that hearing from residents helps guide where officers put their time and energy.
The department frames this as a return to basics: more boots on the ground, more patrol presence, more conversations with locals and less reliance on tech or long investigations that don’t always connect back to what residents experience daily. That’s the “old-school” approach they want to revive, emphasizing personal contact and community trust rather than only responding to calls after problems have already escalated.
Not every comment was glowing, and some residents pushed back on certain ideas — but police officials say the feedback has been constructive and will shape the next round of outreach and strategy.
This was just round one. More community meetings are expected as the department continues to refine its approach based on what locals say they want — whether that’s tougher enforcement on nuisance issues or better neighborhood partnerships.
If you missed the first chats, there will be more chances to weigh in as Casper’s “back-to-basics” policing efforts take shape.
