Greenland’s government has delivered a blunt message to Washington: the island is not a real estate deal.

Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen told US special envoy Jeff Landry that Greenland is “not for sale” during talks in Nuuk, as Donald Trump’s administration continues to push for greater US control over the Arctic territory.

Landry, appointed by Trump last year to lead efforts around a possible US purchase of Greenland, met Nielsen and Greenland’s Foreign Minister Mute Egede to discuss the territory’s future. The meeting was described as “constructive”, but Nielsen said there was “no sign…that anything had changed” in the US position.

“The Greenlandic people are not for sale. Greenlandic self-determination is not something that can be negotiated,” Nielsen said after the meeting, according to Danish TV 2.

He added that Greenland is “focused on finding a solution that is good for us all” while deterring threats of “annexation, takeover or purchase”.

Trump has repeatedly argued that the United States needs control of Greenland for security reasons, pointing to the risks of Russian or Chinese influence in the Arctic. He has also accused Denmark, a NATO ally, of failing to do enough to protect the island.

That position has caused unease inside NATO, where European members have objected to Trump’s threats, including his suggestion that military force could be used.

Landry did not immediately comment after the talks. According to Danish public broadcaster DR, he said on arrival that Trump had instructed him to “go over there and make as many friends as we can get”.

Greenland’s officials appear willing to talk, but not on the question Washington keeps circling.

“They asked for a meeting, and we’ve explained our situation and standpoint, and that we have some red lines – we will not sell Greenland, we will own Greenland for all time,” Egede said.

The foreign minister said experts from the US, Greenland and Denmark are working to find a way forward, adding that the process appears “promising”.

The stakes are not only symbolic. Greenland’s location has made it increasingly important in Arctic security debates, especially as competition between the US, Russia and China intensifies. Trump has also said control of Greenland matters because the island could be part of his Golden Dome defence system against nuclear attack.
