Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu is reportedly planning to offer his resignation following a strong showing by far-right opposition leader George Simion in the first round of the presidential election on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the matter, as per Bloomberg.
Ciolacu, who heads the governing Social Democrats, is expected to tender his resignation after the second-round runoff election on May 18, the source said, speaking on condition of anonymity. A meeting of the ruling coalition is scheduled for later today in Bucharest to discuss the situation.
The potential resignation follows a significant upset in the first round, where George Simion, a nationalist figure who has expressed alignment with Donald Trump, secured over 40% of the vote in a repeat election. He will now face Bucharest’s centrist mayor, Nicusor Dan, in the second round. Crin Antonescu, the former leader of the Liberal party and the candidate backed by the current ruling coalition, finished third and will not advance to the runoff.
